Right, so watching Band of Brothers has dug up some stories my Grandpa told me before he passed away about the war, and this one is particularly hilarious so I thought I’d share.
So my Grandpa served in the Canadian armed forces under Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry in Italy. While he was there, he and his troop had to do regular patrols around the area they’d managed to secure. However, the only thing that divided German territory and Canadian territory was a small river that crossed through the plains.
So one night my Grandpa with his troop were doing their regular patrol in basically pitch-black conditions, and SOMEHOW managed to cross the stream on to the other side without noticing. So they keep walking, and there is another group of men approaching them.
As they pass, they all say their greetings, my Grandpa and his men saying ‘Good Evening’ and the like, while the men passing them said their own greetings, such as ‘Gute Nacht’.
And the continued on their way.
And kept walking…
Until one of the men was like “Uh… were they speaking German?”
And then they quickly hopped over on to the other side of the stream and never told anyone what had happened.
And I suspect the German soldiers never spoke about it, either.
